Why didn't he just wrap the sheet or blanket from his bed around him to do his search?
This really does seem complete overkill. His parents don't bother to find out whether his side of the story is true or not before sentencing him to a week long punishment and then allowing someone else to decide what it will be. Mary Ann ought to know that this punishment will last far longer than a week.
