This really does seem complete overkill. His parents don't bother to find out whether his side of the story is true or not before sentencing him to a week long punishment and then allowing someone else to decide what it will be. Mary Ann ought to know that this punishment will last far longer than a week.

Mom just springs this on him at the last possible moment? You don't set him up as wanting to be a girl. He was looking forward to going to the same school as his brother.
